Lawrence A. Ward

April 25, 1924 - June 5, 2001
Graduated from Blackfoot (Idaho)
High School in 1942, and had 1/2 year of aviation mechanics in
Pocatello, Idaho, prior to enlisting in the U.S. Army Air Corps in
December 1942. He served until April 15, 1945. After flying 6 missions
out of Italy in B-17 Bombers as Co-Pilot and Pilot, he spent 2-1/2
months as a Prisoner of War of Germany. Retained reserve Air Force
status until September 6, 1963 and retired as a Major.
Married Helen Hoskins on July 8,
1945. Began training in the jewelry business in 1946, getting a
Registered Chronograph Watch Technician certificate. Opened Ward's
Jewelry in Idaho Falls, Idaho in 1950 and in 1955 moved the business to
Fallbrook. Was active in Ward's Jewelers with his wife and sons until
June 2000, when George moved the business to Bonsall.
Took additional courses from the
Gemological Institute of America attaining the following certificates:
Registered Jeweler, Diamond Grading And Evaluation Certificate, and
Graduate Gemologist. For many years was a member of the American Gem
Society and had certificates as a Certified Gemologist and one of the
first private gem laboratories certified by the AGS.
In earlier years he was an active
member of: The Lions Club, The Interclub Council (president), the
Fallbrook Merchants Association (vice-president and president), the
ACTIVE committee (chairman), the Fallbrook Chamber of Commerce (on
the board twice and once as treasurer), Fallbrook Toastmasters and The
Exchange Club.
